How does hiv/aids cause petechiae? is it due to low platelet count or some other mechanism? i have normal platelets but worried hiv could be the cause

Here's what to do: Get yourself one of these modern tests for HIV that's sensitive after the first month. You're not going to have any peace otherwise. Then live and love safetly. HIV may cause thrombocytopenia but seldom petechiae until you're very sick. Little vessels can rupture from exercising, rough-housing, or popular practices involving negative intraoral pressure. Conjunctival petechiae -- think endocarditis

HIV and petechiae: HIV might result in petechiae, but only from low platelets. But i agree with Dr. Friedlander: since you're worried, have an HIV test so you won't continue to fret about it. The chance it will be positive depends on your lifestyle and HIV exposure risk, not on this or any other symptoms. Good luck!

Petechiae: Petechiae can occur in the presence of a normal platelet count if the platelets themselves are dysfunctional. Petechiae also occur when capillaries in the skin are fragile and leak blood. They also are seen in diseases that cause Vasculitis which itself causes leakage of blood from tiny vessels.
