16 y/o kids don't: get pain like this unless they've been injured or are coming down with an infection. It"s safe for him to take Ibuprofen or Naproxen for now, but he needs to see a doctor. The white nails don't particularly concern me right now since he's not anemic and, without more info, I can't comment on your observation that he "takes longer to get well..." Again, make an appt. for him with a doctor.
