It depends: A calorie is a measure of heat produced when you burn something. The only food that is primarily burned for energy is carbohydrates. Proteins and fats are used for many other purposes. So calorie counting really only matters when you count carbs. The typical person only needs about 150 grams of carbohydrate per day. That translates to 600 calories.
