Tender enlarged lymph node under chin

These lymph nodes: may not mean anything, unless there is a readily diagnosed condition that will explain their existence, such as acute infection or tumor. Lymph nodes can pop in and out, without rhyme or reason. The existence of CHRONICALLY enlarging lymph nodes would be a red flag. Periodic followup CTs at intervals of 3 or 6 months would be recommended if they remain >1 month.

Probably your friend: I've had one since a strep throat in med school. Different people have big lymphoid outposts in different places. They're there to help you, and only if they are clearly abnormal (huge, rock-hard, stuck to something they shouldn't be) should you consider biopsy.
