A member asked:

Strep pneumoniae from sinuses in blood, told i got it recently. but could sinuses have been infected for longer leading up to it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes most likely: if the bacteria found a way into your bloodstream (bacteremia), then you have had sinus infection for a while -- typically an acute infection would not occur in that way. Your immune system works overtime to prevent bacteria from entering your bloodstream, unless it has been overwhelmed by the infection. And that usually occurs over a period of weeks, not days.
