A child is on methotrexate 12.5mg once weekly for jra. she was prescribed amoxicillin for a sinus infection. is it okay for her to be taking these together? i saw that there is a potential for interaction between the two.

Drugs: If she has been receiving the methotrexate weekly before starting the amoxicillin, she should be OK. It is important to treat infections with in a biotics like Amoxicillin especially if she is on immuno suppressive therapy like Methotrexate for JRA. Recommend a timely follow up appt. for New infection treated with amoxicillin.

Yes but not a major: Yes there is an interaction but not at the doses we use for arthritis. the amoxicillin can increase the level of methotrexate. This is a problem with the high anti-cancer doses we use to treat malignancy. But you may want to hold the methotrexate until the sinus infection clears.
