A member asked:

My daughter is 3 and has her 3-5 toes flexed and medially rotated at the pip. my ped podiatrist said he may also have to cut the bone, why?

Because when a toe : Is contracted there are essentially three ways to possibly correct: 1) soft tissue by cutting or lengthening a tendon 2) an arthroplasty which is cutting some bone 3) fusing - joining the two bones together....

Mgt: It depends on the extent of the problem. Since surgery has been suggested and your daughter is still growing, I would suggest consulting with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon as well. Maybe your podiatrist can discuss her case with the Ortho service.
