A 29-year-old female asked:

Can doxycycline treat acne? how long it's going to take to treat acne?

Not by itself: I see that you also have thrush and if you do, perhaps this isn't the best time to start on doxycycline. I trust you have been using topical benzoyl peroxide and this is the basis of your treatment. Usually you see good results in a few weeks with an effective anti-acne combination. Spironolactone, the birth control pill, or topical clindamycin are other possibilities.

2-3 weeks: You may wish to add topical Clindamycin with or without a retinoic acid derivative. If you do not get a satisfactory result after 6 weeks, consider a dermatology consult for the big guns -- more unpleasant and more dangerous but hugely effective. This is the 21st century and nobody needs to have unwanted acne. Good luck.

Physician decision: This is in common use for acne in various protocols. The dose/frequency & duration is determined by the prescribing physician after a thorough review of the case.
