Benign nodule : Common surface nodules on the neck include cysts and lipomas. They may grow larger or be painful. However there are some nodules that may be cancerous. See a dermatologist for an evaluation.

What about the lump?: If it is VERY large, more than a good inch across, rock hard, and / or stuck to nearby structures, get it seen. Otherwise, it's probably a lymph node and your friend.
