Expert opinion: The guidelines are based on expert opinion. There are no (and never will be) randomized controlled studies to determine the optimal dose. In the USA, the consensus expert opinion is 2 grams of amoxicillin 1 hour before dental procedures. Medical care in the UK is first rate. I would trust their opinion equally. (maybe 1 gram is enough - no one knows!).
