Secondary infection.: Viral respiratory infections produce a lot of mucus, which is a magnet for germs. This is why you may have a secondary infection with a bacteria, later in the course of the virus. Also, OTC cough & cold meds prolong symptoms & may increase chance of secondary bacterial infections. Get checked, you may now need antibiotics. Fragrances & aerosols are as bad as second-hand smoke, stop them when sick
