Negativity, yes: Having negative thoughts and a poor self image can be an aspect of depression, but it is not necessarily the only part. There are good therapies to help someone start recognizing when they may be overly critical about their perception of themselves. I suggest seeing a counselor or doctor to discuss this.

Normal symptoms: It is indeed one of the normal symptoms of depression to have feelings of guilt, no good, at fault, etc. That's why depression is best treated with a combination of meds and cognitive behavior or mindfulness therapies. the idea is to help the person assess and clarify thinking patterns, establish behaviors that are healthy, positive, and contribute to a better view of self and others,
