ANA FIRST: The first test done is called an anti nuclear antibody or ana. If this test is positive then we proceed with further testing to look more specifically for lupus.. There are other antibodies that can be tested that will tell you if lupus is more likely there or not. It is also determined by the presence of certain symptoms.There are 11 symptoms that are associated with lupus. But ANA first.

The ANA: The ANA is the best screening test. If that test is negative, you can usually stop there. If it is positive other tests for more specific autoantibodies can be performed.
