Depends: Swelling can be localized - joint (due to arthritis or other causes) or skin (allergy, infection,etc) or more generalized due to retention of salt and water. Generalized swelling (many causes, some serious) is usually not painful and shows up in legs on both sides due to effects of gravity unless bed bound. Low salt diet helps but need to check with MD for cause and more definitive treatment.
