Peroxide = pain!: Teeth whiteners that use some form of peroxide to remove deep intrinsic stain (almost all do!) have the potential for discomfort. Try reducing contact time and using them less frequently. Sometimes brushing with a desensitizing toothpaste like sensodyne prior to whitening helps.

OTC : Over the counter products like whitening toothpatse and whitening strips can be effective with little or no pain. You should always see a dentist first to ensure you are a good candidate for whitening.

Many: Most toothpaste for whitening do not cause sensitivity. Some patients, however, already have sensitive teeth. The most common otc whitening product is crest white strips. This seems to work but not great and often causes sensitivity. In our office, the professional products we use are based on the patients level of sensitivity and we also have desensitizers for use beforehand if needed.
