What causes bumps to appear on your tongue?

Normal: Normally the surface of your tongue is covered with papillae. About 2/3 of the way back there are other shaped structures back there. Sometimes areas drop down and you see areas with smooth borders which looked to doctors like a map - hence the term geographic tongue.
