Prostate: A rectal exam is the most direct way to evaluate the prostate. With benign prostatic hypertrophy the gland is enlarged but usually not nodular. When a nodule is felt a biopsy probably should be done. The PSA test in the blood can help in the diagnosis. There is an increased rate of detectable cancer with serum PSA levels of 2.6 to 4.0.
