Viral sore throat: If your strep test was negative, the most likely cause is viral. Treatment is symptomatic - use warm salt water gargles, anesthetic cough drops (like cepacol lozenges). See your doctor if not better in a week, or if getting worse. Sometimes severe sore throat can be caused by mono.
