Muscle pain: The most likely cause is a muscle strain. The sternocleidomastoid functions in neck rotation, so a strain can result from overuse of the neck muscles or abnormal neck positioning. Another cause could be infection of the overlying skin and or muscle itself. This would be associated with redness and warmth in the area. Treat initially with ice, anti-inflammatories, rest.
