A member asked:

Is there any health benefit in having frequent bowel movements, like twice a day as appose to less frequent, like once every 3 or 4 days? please explain, thank you very much

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bowel pattern varies: everyone's stool pattern is different. some people have 1 bowel movement/day and other people may have bowel movements every 3 to 4 days. The frequency of bowel movements depends on how active you are, your diet and how much water and fluids that you drink. formed and nonpainful bowel movements are the goal. A probiotic may help with bowel movements. any blood or hard stools is a problem.
