Almost never: Most colds are caused by viruses. Viruses don't respond to antibiotics! If you have a history of asthma, exercise-induced cough, seasonal cough, dry non-productive cough there is a good chance that the cough is secondary to asthma and will respond quickly to the appropriate administration of bronchodilators. Treat and avoid allergens.
