ORIF: Certainly any time bones are described as "shattered" that sugggests a very serious injury. Usually as orthopedic surgeons we try to fix fractures through procedures called orif (open reduction and internal fixation). This means putting the bones back together with plates, screws, wires, etc... Sometimes severely fractured knee joints are treated with a form of joint replacement.
