Sleep onset insomnia: Difficulty falling asleep is the most common form of insomnia. And the easiest to treat. The first task is to start a sleep diary. Record the time you turn out the light. The next morning, record how long it took you to fall asleep and the time you get out of bed. With a few weeks of data, patterns will emerge. Look at evening caffeine consumption, for example. And regularity of sleep times.

Stay out of bed: It helps to stay away from the bed until you're already starting to fall asleep. Exercise earlier in the day and push yourself to stay active mentally--learn something. Around bedtime prepare for getting into bed--take care of teeth, locking doors, making lists, etc. But, don't get into bed yet. Instead, sit quietly and read or do a relaxing activity until the "sleep wave" comes.
