Wisdom tooth: When there is gum tissue covering part of a wisdom tooth it is common for infections to occur. This is because it is very difficult you you to clean so debris and bacteria can be stuck under this flap of tissue. This area can be cleaned out and antibiotics will help in the short term. The tooth may need to be removed. Your dentist can advise you nice he evaluates the tooth and X-ray.

Pain: Could be either. Or could be partially impacted wisdom tooth has caused damage to surrounding bone/gums/teeth.
