Eyes Red and Painful: Yes. Unfortunately eye infections can be very severe and occur without much warning. This situation is also very contagious and so getting on treatment soon is paramount..As is washing your hands frequently during the day.

Yes: If your eye is infected with a very aggressive, virulent bacteria the development of pus and discharge can be rapid and overwhelming. Get treated.
