Maybe Shingles: Shingles, or herpes zoster infection often presents as surface pain. A short time later you might begin to see raised red areas on the skin. If you do, then contact your PCP or dermatologist as soon as possible so they can start you on anti-viral meds ASAP. It shortens the course of the illness.
