Looking 4 infection: The swab was most likely for a culture of infectious microbes like gonorrhea or chlamydia (two common sexually transmitted diseases). There are now also ways to find these infections in the urine, without having to insert a swab into the urethra (thank goodness). It is also possible to detect herpes this way. The swab test can not detect syphilis or most other STDs.
