The pharynx: located behind your mouth and nose is an open connection between your mouth and nose. Anything that you swallow can affect the nose through this open connection. The contents of what you swallow generally travels down through the esophagus to your stomach. Gravity is all that keeps it from traveling up into your nose, but contact with nasopharynx, especially temperature changes can affect nose.
