Triglycerides: Triglycerides are the free fat storage molecules made from excess calories, especially excess sugars in the diet. Triglycerides thicken the blood leading to more arterial damage and growth of plaque that can block arteries. Triglycerides can be lowered with a low carb diet and regular exercise to burn off excess calories.

A very recent: publication in the NEJM showed that people that had genetics that provided low triglycerides had less cardiovascular problems shows that lowering high triglycerides is beneficial. Cholesterol lowering toxic statins might be be better substituted with omega-3 Lovaza or Vascepa.
