Subungual Melanoma: Melanonychia is dark pigmentation of the nail. Melanonychia commonly presents as dark band arranged lengthwise along the nail known as longitudinal melanonychia (LM) or melanonychia striata. Causes include of melanonychia include subungual melanoma, physiologic longitudinal melanonychia, systemic disorders, trauma, inflammatory disorders, fungal infections, drugs, & benign melanocytic hyperplasia.

Black is Black.: Mam, the fact that you are asking, might mean, that you are having some concerns already. I can tell you that of the many black streaked nails that I've seen over the years, only a few were found to be something to worry about. Having said that, if you were one of those few patients, you were extremely happy you had the nails evaluated. It is best to seek an experienced specialist for resolution.
