Subungual Melanoma: Melanonychia is dark pigmentation of the nail. Melanonychia commonly presents as dark band arranged lengthwise along the nail known as longitudinal melanonychia (LM) or melanonychia striata. Causes include of melanonychia include subungual melanoma, physiologic longitudinal melanonychia, systemic disorders, trauma, inflammatory disorders, fungal infections, drugs, & benign melanocytic hyperplasia.

I can tell you that of the many black streaked nails that I've seen over the years, only a few were found to be something to worry about.
