Ultimately an x-ray: The bruising we see after an injury is from bleeding of something under the skin. It could be soft tissue or bone. The bruising in itself is not a major problem. When your foot begins to swell and you feel substantial pain, you definitely must immobilize it and have it treated. The most immediate way to treat such an injury, is to stay off of it and keep it elevated. In doubt-get an x-ray.
