No, not common: Usually a woman can get away with skipping the week of placebo BC pills and starting the next pack of BC pills immediately after finishing the active pills. This usually results in a missed period. However, as you have learned, it does not always work out that well. Don't worry. Continue your birth control pills as prescribed and your periods will regulate again in 1-2 months.
