More than shadows: Newborns do only see in black and white, but more than just shadows. Their vision is somewhat blurry, but it is certainly not 20/20. They like sharp demarcations, so alert to contrast of black against white. It is true they can see better closer up, but still not completely in focus. Color vision starts at 4-6 weeks of age, with red and yellow seen first.
