Endometrioisis: If your periods were tolerable prior to the OCPs, you may have developed some endometriosis (implants of the lining of the uterus into the abdomen and pelvis) or adenomyosis (thickening of the muscular wall of the uterus). Birth control pills do suppress these symptoms, but do not prevent them. An infection may also contribute to painful, heavy periods. Anti-inflammatories may help the pain.
