A 29-year-old female asked:

how can you tell the difference between a hangover and alcohol poisoning? i drank a lot last night. symptoms: vomiting, rapid heart rate, weak/shaky

They can go together: You should have a physical exam to be sure your medical condition is stable. Depending on the amount and duration of your drinking as well as the exact nature of your symptoms some medication usually short term may be prescribed. Hopefully there will be a discussion of your drinking pattern and how it is impacting your life .

I get itchy nose and eyes when I drink alcohol. Is this normal?

Itchy eyes: You may have an allergic response to the alcohol or a preservative in the alcohol. As long as you have no shortness of breath, it is ok to try some artificial tears, or an allergy drop such as zaditor (ketotifen) (over the counter). If symptoms persist, call your local ophthalmologist.

No: A pulled muscle or perhaps costochondritis can not cause you to have a heart attack. But if you have underlying heart disease, i suggest you have an evaluation from a cardiologist and perhaps have a stress test.
A 39-year-old member asked:

Is it a bad idea to drink alcohol if i'm taking asacol, (mesalamine) mercaptopurine, prednisone, and celexa?

Dr. Neil Liebowitz

Yes: Alcohol depletes serotonin making Celexa (citalopram) not work. Alcohol causes diahrea and irritates your bowel (you apparently have inflamatory bowel problem from your meds) do you think a few hours of alcohol high is worth days to weeks of agony from ibs and depression?
