Do very small (0.5 - 2.0 mm) atypical moles that one has had since childhood pose a significant danger?

Not likely: If the moles are not changing and have been present since childhood they are likely fine. Having a positive family history of skin cancer or genetic predisposition to skin cancers would change that assessment. In general you are looking out for changing lesions, usually larger than 5-6mm, irregularly shaped, uneven coloration, some that itch or bleed, etc.

Not much: The risk of malignant transformation is very small. The risk that one of them is a melanoma masquerading as an atypical mole is also very small. A dermatologist can evaluate you and teach you how to better recognize the features of possible skin cancers.
