High venous pressure: Leg edema reflects high pressure in leg veins. It's important to determine the cause: heart failure, often due to high blood pressure, heart valve disease or heart muscle weakness, or leg vein valve failure due to dilated veins, or leg vein blood clots form the most common causes of leg swelling. Treat by reducing the pressure, elevating legs, blood thinners and use of compression stockings.

Leg swelling.: There are many reasons to have leg swelling and it can involve one or both legs. This swelling can be due to underlying medical problems such as heart, lung, liver or kidney disease or it could be due to other problems such as lymphedema, venous insufficiency or venous clots. Infections and trauma can also lead to leg swelling. If you have swelling you should start with a leg venous ultrasound.
