See doctor: It is impossible to tell as to what your problem may be although trauma comes to mind leading to inflammation at the rib cage and thus the pain with breathing. Sometimes violent coughing can cause the inflammation as well. I recommend a visit with your doctor.

Muscle/vertebrae: You may have several things going on. One, you may have spasm of the musculature of your low back/side surrounding your lumbar/low spine which heat and stretching may help. Two, you may have a vertebrae or two that are slightly out of place, causing the spasm and the bulk of the pain. Physical therapy and osteopathic manipulative therapy would be very beneficial to you.
