Family practice : This is an overuse syndrome there has been recurrent injury to the achilles' tendon. Self repair may cause nodules to appear. If antiinflamatories , icing , stretching exercises , and therapy don't help then sometimes surgery is needed see a podiatrist if it doesn't heal.

Achilles tendonosis: When a strong achilles tendon remains inflamed it may develop degeneration, micro tears & ongoing swelling. At areas of tears and swelling, lumps or nodules may form. The underlying problem is generally overuse of this band of tissue which runs down the back of the lower leg & connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. Nodules sometimes persist even after rest, ice, therapy have brought repair.
