Albuterol (ventolin): is a short acting bronchodilator, it opens up constricted airways, allowing a person to breath easier. It is the best medicine for treating shortness of breath related to asthma, and the most common medication in rescue inhalers. Many people with asthma need to take longer acting medications in addition to using albuterol as needed for shortness of breath.

Short term: They are usually effective for acute attacks and pre-exercise but should not be used regularly to control asthma. If you need to use the rescue inhaler more than 2x/wk (other than for exercise), you need a controller drug such as inhaled steroid. Using Ventolin alone on a daily basis for asthma control can actually worsen your asthma.
