3 to 5 minutes: Ventolin is a quick-relief bronchodilator and the effect begins in 3 to 5 minutes and peaks at about 20 to 30 minutes. Most asthma action plans suggest 2 to 6 puffs then repeat in 20 minutes. Thereafter, the ventolin is used every 4 hours typically. If not better, then call doc or seek treatment at er ask your doctor for a written asthma action plan.

Albuterol for asthma: Albuterol is a short-acting beta-agonist that is typically prescribed to be taken every 4 hours as needed for shortness of breath. Therefore, it should kick in pretty quickly to relieve your breathing difficulties, say 5-10 minutes. Of course, you need to use proper technique (we often recommend using a spacer - toilet paper roll is a cheap option). If you're not better, go to urgent care or er.
