See below: Sudden severe shooting pain in the head, that lasts only seconds, is called a Primary Stabbing or Ice Pick headache. The cause is unknown. It can occur only occasionally or it can happen frequently. Treatment isn't needed for the occasional pain but can be helpful if it occurs frequently. Occasionally an underlying cause is found, so if it occurs often, it's advisable to see your physician.
