A 27-year-old member asked:

Does my colon need to be cleansed periodically for me to stay in good health?

No: Colon cleansing will remove the normal bacteria in the colon and can lead to overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Stool bulking agents such as fiber, psyllium, or products such as MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) work to promote natural evacuation of the tract. Probiotics will help maintian the natural flora. A well-balanced diet also will promote normal bowel function.

Why are celebrities having colon cleanses?

Fashionable: There is no medical justification for this procedure. The colon itself actually needs stool to get nutrients and to have good health; a colon deprived of stool atrophies and becomes ill. So it's just an expensive fad with no documented evidence that it helps anything.

How effective are colonic cleansings?

1 doctor answer5 doctors weighed in
Dr. Charles Cattano
Gastroenterology 39 years experience
Don't do it!: Healthtap physicians have repeatedly addressed this subject with a clear "no" answer to your question. There is virtually no value to colon flushes, cleansers, enemas, irrigation machines when the technique is accomplished to "detox" or eliminate "accumulated waste" or for weight loss. There are few real health benefits, but sigificant unjustified risk. Don't use colonics please unless prescribed.
A 37-year-old member asked:

What are the uses of colonic cleanses?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. George Klauber
Specializes in Pediatric Urology
Colonic enemas: Legitimate uses for colonic enemas or cleanses is for severe constipation, neurogenic bowel dysfuction or as part of a bowel prep. Prior to surgery involving bowel. Colonic cleanse can be performed by a cleanout from above prior to colonoscopy or bowel surgery. Colonic cleanses, for otherwise healthy individuals, is hocus pocus with no proof of efficacy. Thus best avoided if not indicated.
