Retainer: See your orthodontist ASAP to get your retainer adjusted so this does it keep happening. A minor cut will heal in a few days without any problems. Problems can arise if the retainer is. Or adjusted properly and this continues to traumatized and cut your tissue. Call the orthodontist today.

Retainer Problems: I would assume by your question that you are referring to a removable retainer. If they are not fitting correctly they can irritate the gum tissue around your teeth. Return to your orthodontist to have her adjust the retainer so it is comfortable. Do this soon as teeth can shift noticably if you discontinue retainer wear.

Unlikely: Unlikely to get infected. Keep clean. See orthodontist to adjust retainer. It should not cut you.

Mechanical: This is a case of mechanical irritation. As soon as the retainer is adjusted the mechanical irritation will disappear and the tissue will begin to heal. Please see your Orthodontist ASAP for an adjustment. You'll feel better immediately, and the tissue will heal in just a few days. Once adjusted, make sure to wear your retainer EXACTLY as directed to enhance stability of the Orthodontic result

Very common: See your dentist/orthodontist for an adjustment if the retainer causes pain or cuts or rubs against your gums. Infection is not likely.
