Different features: The earliest presentation of throat cancer is leukoplakia or a whitened area representing in situ squamous cancer. Other times one sees an early superficial ulceration that doesn't heal. The characteristic of the area on palpation is that no matter how minimal, the lesion is firm on palpation and requires bx for diagnosis.
