A member asked:

Isn't it true that if you remove jewellery from an infected piercing it closes up and will form an abscess even more dangerous?

No: if the infection is treated you will not likely have anything more than the usual scar. However the jewelry should be removed during the treatment. Make sure that you are not allergic to the metal in the jewelry in the first place.

No: It will not close if infected. Most people who think a piercing is infected are actually having an allergic reaction to nickel sulfate or bacitracin. The details matter. Usually it is best to remove the piercing either for infection or for allergy. It is important to define it precisely and treat it accordingly.
