Costochondritis: If you're having mid-chest pain and are concerned about a heart attack, the first thing and ER doc will do is push on your breast bone (sternum). If that hurts, it proves the source of pain is inflammation of the junction of the ribs with the sternum. An NSAID can help reduce inflammation. The cause is usually not determined--it may be viral. If it resolves, it doesn't matter.
