GERD, postnasal drip: Gastroesophageal reflux, in which stomach contents can jump up into the throat, can cause recurrent throat irritation. Postnasal drip, such as from allergies, can also cause repeated throat irritation. Smokers and people who drink substantial amounts of alcohol are at higher risk for throat cancer than those who do not. Unexplained symptoms that persist despite treatment warrant evaluation.
