AROUND 17-20%: Essential body fat--fat that is present in nerves, bone marrow, organs--is 12% of body mass for women, 5% for men. Some competitive athletes target that level. But for most women, healthy body fat % is 18 to 30%. The point a which a woman's period would stop is individual in each woman; many people estimate it at 17 to 22%, but this is not absolute. Long duration/intense training contributes.
