About 10% rate: Depending on the size, the nature of repair and findings in the OR, in general there is about a 10% complication rate. The most serious is a hole in the intestine created while freeing it up from the hernia, while not common, can cause infection and death (1%). The most common complications include chronic pain (often present before surgery) requiring surgery (2%) and recurrent hernia (about 3%).
